Pros

  • Extremely cheap and available everywhere
  • Reliable standard that has been tested for millions of hours globally
  • Straightforward to set the VREF potentiometer
  • Perfectly adequate for 90% of basic NEMA 17 applications

Cons

  • Limits out at 1/16 microstepping, making motors slightly louder
  • Runs hotter than newer drivers when pushed towards 1.5A
  • Requires an external logic power supply pin to operate

DRV8825

Pros

  • Supports 1/32 microstepping, making the motor significantly quieter and smoother

Cons

  • Known for a "missing step" issue at very low speeds without diode smoothers
