MPU6050 (6-Axis IMU)

Pros

  • Includes a Gyroscope! Can track rotation and spin dynamically
  • Features an onboard Digital Motion Processor (DMP) to do complex math for you (like filtering noise)
  • The absolute gold standard for quadcopters and self-balancing robots
  • Incredibly accurate when the accelerometer and gyro data are fused together

Cons

  • Library math can be heavy for a standard Arduino Uno without using the DMP
  • DMP documentation is confusing and primarily relies on reverse-engineered libraries
  • Higher power consumption

ADXL345 (3-Axis)

Pros

  • Supports both SPI and I2C communication
  • Extremely simple to read XYZ raw gravity values
  • Built-in tap/double-tap detection and free-fall detection interrupts
  • Very low power consumption, ideal for battery-operated pedometers

Cons

  • NO GYROSCOPE! It cannot measure spin or twist, only linear acceleration and gravity tilt
  • Struggles with dynamic tilt measurement (it gets confused if moving and tilting at the same time)
  • Costs almost as much as the MPU6050 but does less

Our Recommendation

Choose the **MPU6050** for drones, self-balancing robots, VR headsets, or anything that rotates or moves quickly through space. Choose the **ADXL345** if you only need to measure static tilt (like a digital level), detect an impact/drop, or build a low-power pedometer.

The Verdict

Generally, you should just buy the MPU6050. The addition of the gyroscope makes it infinitely more useful for modern robotics at barely any extra cost.
