IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module

The IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module is a compact infrared proximity detector for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, robotics and DIY automation projects. Using an IR emitter/receiver pair and an LM393 comparator, it detects nearby reflective objects and provides a clean digital output. The onboard potentiometer lets you fine-tune detection sensitivity, while indicator LEDs simplify testing, making it ideal for line-following robots, smart counters, object detection and contactless trigger circuits.

About IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module

The IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module is one of the most popular low-cost sensors for robotics and embedded projects in India. It works by transmitting infrared light from the onboard IR LED and monitoring the reflected light received by the IR photodiode/phototransistor. When an object comes within the set range, the LM393 comparator switches the module’s digital OUT pin, so a microcontroller can read obstacle presence with a simple HIGH/LOW input instead of complex analogue processing. This module is designed for quick prototyping with Arduino UNO, Nano, Mega, ESP8266, ESP32, Raspberry Pi GPIO projects, 8051/AVR/PIC development boards and other controller circuits. The onboard preset potentiometer allows the user to adjust detection sensitivity and practical range, commonly around 2 cm to 10 cm depending on surface colour, reflectivity, angle and ambient light. A power LED and output/status LED help you confirm wiring and sensor triggering during setup. Typical applications include obstacle avoiding robots, edge or object detection, automatic hand-detection triggers, small conveyor object counters, non-contact switches, classroom electronics experiments and basic automation systems. Since it gives a digital output, it is easy to connect to interrupt pins or digital input pins for fast obstacle response. For best results, mount the IR transmitter and receiver side facing the target and avoid direct sunlight or strong IR sources. Pin notes: VCC connects to 3.3V or 5V supply, GND connects to system ground, and OUT connects to a digital input pin. Many LM393 IR obstacle modules provide an active-low output when an obstacle is detected, but users should verify the behaviour with the onboard LED for their batch. Package includes one IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module.
