Based on the NXP MFRC522 contactless reader IC, this popular module supports ISO/IEC 14443A and MIFARE mode communication, making it suitable for reading and writing compatible 13.56 MHz RFID cards, key fobs and tags. It is widely used in Arduino RFID projects because the module is inexpensive, compact and supported by many open-source libraries. The module works by generating a 13.56 MHz RF field through its onboard antenna. When a compatible passive RFID card or tag enters the field, the tag is powered wirelessly and exchanges data with the MFRC522 reader IC. Your microcontroller communicates with the module through the SPI interface using pins such as SDA/SS, SCK, MOSI, MISO, RST and IRQ. The module operates at 3.3 V logic, so level shifting is recommended when interfacing with 5 V microcontrollers. This RC522 RFID reader/writer is a practical choice for DIY access control, RFID door locks, student attendance systems, library or asset tracking prototypes, prepaid card demonstrations, maker projects and IoT authentication.
