A 16x2 LCD can display 32 alphanumeric characters at a time, arranged as 16 columns and 2 rows, making it one of the most popular displays for Arduino projects, embedded systems and educational kits in India. It is commonly used to show live sensor values, menu options, device status, password prompts, battery voltage, temperature, time, count values and diagnostic messages.
The module is based on the widely supported HD44780-compatible LCD controller architecture, so it works with standard LCD libraries available for Arduino IDE, AVR, PIC, STM32 and many other microcontrollers. It can be operated in 8-bit mode for full parallel control or 4-bit mode to save microcontroller pins. A contrast input pin allows adjustment using a 10k potentiometer, while the LED backlight pins make the display readable in indoor and low-light environments. The standard 16-pin header layout includes power, contrast, register select, read/write, enable, data lines D0-D7 and backlight connections.
