Build reliable contactless identification projects with the MFRC522 RC522 RFID Reader Module kit, one of the most popular low-cost 13.56MHz RFID modules for embedded electronics. The board is built around the NXP MFRC522 reader IC, a highly integrated contactless communication controller designed for ISO/IEC 14443A cards and MIFARE-type transponders. It is widely used with Arduino Uno, Arduino Nano, Mega, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32 and other 3.3V logic microcontrollers through the SPI interface.
The module generates a 13.56MHz RF field through its onboard antenna coil. When a compatible RFID card or key fob is brought near the reader, the tag is powered wirelessly and exchanges its UID and data blocks with the MFRC522 IC. This makes it suitable for card detection, UID-based authentication, attendance logging, locker access, smart door locks, library systems and small automation projects. Typical reading distance is a few centimetres and depends on the tag type, antenna alignment, supply quality and surrounding metal objects.
This RC522 RFID kit is especially useful for beginners because it includes both a test card and key fob, so you can start coding immediately without buying tags separately. The module header exposes standard pins including 3.3V, GND, RST, IRQ and SPI signals: SDA/SS, SCK, MOSI and MISO. Use a regulated 3.3V supply and 3.3V logic levels; when connecting to 5V boards, level shifting is recommended on signal lines for long-term reliability.
