L293D Motor Driver IC

The L293D Motor Driver IC is a popular 16-pin DIP quadruple half-H bridge driver for controlling DC motors, bipolar stepper motors, relays and solenoids from microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi and 8051 boards. It accepts TTL/DTL-compatible logic and drives inductive loads over a 4.5V to 36V motor supply range with up to 600mA output current per channel. Integrated clamp diodes make the L293D ideal for compact robotics and automation projects.

Details

The L293D is a rugged, easy-to-use motor driver IC designed for projects that need bidirectional control of brushed DC motors or coil-based loads. It contains four high-current half-H push-pull driver channels in a through-hole 16-pin DIP package, allowing it to be used as two full H-bridges for two DC motors or one bipolar stepper motor. Because the inputs are compatible with standard TTL and DTL logic levels, the IC interfaces directly with Arduino, AVR, PIC, 8051 and many other microcontroller development boards. In operation, the microcontroller controls the L293D input pins to switch the motor direction, while the enable pins can be used for ON/OFF control or PWM speed control. The IC separates the logic supply from the motor supply, so low-voltage logic can control motors operating from the 4.5V to 36V range. The “D” version includes integrated clamp/flyback diodes, which help protect the outputs when driving inductive loads such as DC motors, relays, solenoids and stepper windings. This L293D motor driver IC is widely used in line follower robots, small mobile robots, Arduino motor shields, mini automation systems, educational electronics labs and DIY mechatronics prototypes. It is a practical choice when you need a simple DIP motor driver that is breadboard-friendly and easy to replace or solder on perfboard. Pin notes: Pin 16 is the logic supply VSS/VCC1, pin 8 is the motor supply VS/VCC2, pins 4, 5, 12 and 13 are ground/heat-sinking pins. Pins 1 and 9 are enable inputs for channels 1-2 and 3-4. Pins 2, 7, 10 and 15 are logic inputs, while pins 3, 6, 11 and 14 are driver outputs. Package includes 1 x L293D 16-pin DIP motor driver IC.
