Unlike a passive buzzer, an active buzzer has a built-in oscillator circuit, so it generates a fixed continuous tone when power or the trigger signal is applied. This makes it very simple to use with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi Pico, STM32 and other microcontroller boards where you need a beep, alarm or status sound without writing PWM sound-generation code. The module typically operates from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it suitable for both 3.3V logic and 5V logic systems. A digital GPIO pin can be used to switch the buzzer ON or OFF; common active buzzer modules use a high/low trigger input, and many variants are active-low. At 5V, the operating current is around 30mA, so for best practice, check the current capability of your controller pin or drive it through a transistor if your application needs extra protection or continuous operation.
