Project Details

Stepper Motor Control using A4988 and Arduino is a beginner-friendly project that demonstrates precise rotational control of a stepper motor. Unlike DC motors, stepper motors rotate in discrete steps, allowing accurate position and speed control. The A4988 driver simplifies motor control by handling current regulation and microstepping, while Arduino only provides STEP and DIR signals. This project is widely used in CNC machines, 3D printers, robotics, camera sliders, and automation systems. It introduces learners to motion control fundamentals.

How It Works

The project works by using an Arduino to send STEP and DIR signals to the A4988 driver. The A4988 translates these signals into precise current pulses to the stepper motor coils, controlling rotation in discrete steps. The Arduino code generates pulses on the STEP pin (with delays to control speed) and sets the DIR pin high or low for direction. The A4988 handles current regulation, microstepping, and protects the motor from overcurrent. A 100µF capacitor across VMOT and GND provides stability for the motor power supply.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of Arduino programming (digital output, loops, delays). Familiarity with basic electronics concepts (voltage, current, ground). Ability to read simple circuit diagrams. No prior experience with stepper motors required.
