  • Standard size means you can buy easy-to-use battery holders
  • Excellent energy density (long run times for low-draw devices)

  • Cannot provide massive bursts of current (bad for drones)
  • Heavy and bulky for flying applications

Pros

  • Can deliver insane bursts of current (perfect for drone motors and high-speed RC)
  • Lighter weight compared to 18650s of the same capacity
  • Can be shaped perfectly flat to fit seamlessly inside custom enclosures and phones
  • Pre-soldered with balancing leads and XT60 standard connectors usually

Cons

  • Soft pouch is vulnerable: a crash puncture can cause a fire (thermal runaway)
  • Must be stored carefully in a fire-proof bag at exactly 3.8V storage charge
  • Puffs up and is destroyed if over-discharged even once
  • Shorter overall lifespan

Choose **18650 cells** for ground robots, IoT weather stations, rovers, and anywhere safety, longevity, and steady power are needed. Choose **LiPo packs** strictly for drones, high-speed RC racing cars, or incredibly flat/thin enclosures.

The Verdict

If it flies, it needs a LiPo. If it drives on the ground or sits on a desk, 18650s are safer, cheaper, and longer-lasting.
