Embedded Systems Basics for Students

Embedded systems combine hardware and software for specific tasks. They power everything from washing machines and cars to medical devices and smart home sensors. For ECE and CSE students, learning embedded systems is essential for final year projects, internships, and placements.

Microcontrollers like Arduino Uno, Arduino Nano, ESP32, and STM32 are at the core of most DIY and college projects. They read sensors, control motors, and communicate over serial, Bluetooth, or WiFi.

Key Concepts Every Student Must Know

GPIO (General Purpose I/O)

GPIO pins let you read digital inputs (button, switch) and drive outputs (LED, relay). You configure pins as INPUT or OUTPUT in code. Most boards have 14–40 GPIO pins.

ADC (Analog to Digital Conversion)

Sensors like temperature, light, or soil moisture give analog voltages. ADC converts these to numbers (e.g. 0–1023 on 10-bit ADC). Essential for reading real-world signals.

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)

Used for LED dimming, motor speed control, and servo positioning. You vary the duty cycle to change brightness or speed. Most microcontrollers have 4–16 PWM pins.

Serial (UART)

The primary way to debug and communicate. Use Serial Monitor in Arduino IDE, or connect Bluetooth (HC-05/HC-06) or ESP32's built-in BLE for wireless debugging.

Interrupts

React to events instantly without polling. Button press, timer, or external trigger can call an interrupt handler. Critical for real-time response.

  1. Blink LED – Hello World, understand setup/loop
  2. Read button – Digital input, debouncing
  3. Analog sensor – ADC, map values
  4. Motor control – PWM, L298N driver
  5. Wireless – BLE (ESP32) or WiFi (NodeMCU, ESP32)
