The most common stepper is the NEMA17. "NEMA17" refers to the faceplate size (1.7 x 1.7 inches). They typically have 200 steps/revolution (1.8 degrees per step).
The A4988 is a microstepping driver. It handles the complex coil sequencing for you. You just send STEP and DIR signals.
