Stepper Motor Control with A4988: Precision Motion

Stepper Motors are the backbone of CNC machines, 3D printers, and robotic arms. Unlike DC motors, they move in discrete steps, allowing for precise positioning without feedback.

NEMA17 Stepper

The most common stepper is the NEMA17. "NEMA17" refers to the faceplate size (1.7 x 1.7 inches). They typically have 200 steps/revolution (1.8 degrees per step).

A4988 Driver

The A4988 is a microstepping driver. It handles the complex coil sequencing for you. You just send STEP and DIR signals.

  • STEP: Pulse this pin to move one step.
  • DIR: HIGH = clockwise, LOW = counter-clockwise.
  • MS1, MS2, MS3: Set microstepping (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 steps for smoother motion).
